                        Safety Procedures Involving the Use of Oxygen and Oxygen Equipment
                        Fire Prevention and Procedures to Follow in Case of Fire Disaster
                        Natural Disaster Preparedness

LAB                  Handwashing, Standard Precautions, Gloving, Gowning, Masks, Double Bagging
                        Oxygen setup, Heimlich Maneuver, Fire Carries

Day 3               Promoting the Resident’s Independence
                        Residents Rights, Patient’s Rights

                        Principles of Ergonomics, Body Mechanics, and Body Alignment

Day 4               Proper use and Application of Restraints

                        The long term care facility as home
                        Bed-Making Techniques and Comfort Measures for the Bed Bound Resident

                        Bed-Making (occupied & unoccupied)

Day 5               Integumentary System. Special Skin Care
                        Bathing Additional Personal Care Skills

LAB                  Complete Bedbath, Partial Bedbath, Back Rub, Perineal Care, Foot Care, Nail Care
                        Hair Care, Shaving, Dressing & Undressing

DAY 6              Cardiovascular System, Respiratory System, Coughing & Deep Breathing
                        Observing and Measuring Vital Signs, Apical Pulse

                        Admission and Discharge, Height and Weight

LAB                  Temp, Pulse, Respirations, Rectal Temp, Blood Pressure, Weight

Day 7               Gastrointestinal System
                        Mealtime, Nutrition and Fluid Needs, Dysphagia, Fluid Intake, Intake & Output
                        Rest and Relaxation, Oral Hygiene
                        Endocrine System, Diabetes

LAB                  Feeding, Fluid Intake, Passing Ice Water

Day 8               Genitourinary System
                        Urinary Elimination, Catheters, Toileting, Intake and Output

                        Pre & Post-operative Care, Sequential Compression Devices, Abductor Wedge,

Day 9               Developmental Stages

                        Glasses, Contacts

                        Special Needs Population
                        Care of the Confused, Withdrawn

Day 10             Post Mortem Care

                        Completion of Application for State Testing
                        Course Evaluation

                        Final Exam

Clinical Experience (16 hours) in a long-term care facility is required. Clinical hours and dates are subject to change, as necessary to meet student & instructor needs.

This program is for 2 1/2 weeks.
